The Asian Soundscape Monitoring Network was jointly established by the Biodiversity Research Center (BRCAS), Grid-computing Centre (ASGC), and Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (TFRI) of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Its mission is to create a transnational collaborative network for monitoring ecological and biodiversity soundscapes in Asia, aiming to establish the first open platform for showcasing, preserving, and utilizing filed recordings. Founded in 2014, the network hosted a training workshop in Taiwan in November 2014, with 27 participants from Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. It laid the foundation for a collaborative soundscape monitoring network in the Asian region and actively established partnerships with government and non-governmental organizations in Taiwan.
Between 2018 and 2019, the Asian Soundscape Monitoring Network received financial support from Asi@Connect (project number: Asi@Connect-17-100). Since 2020, the sponsorship has continued under the support of Academia Sinica. With collaborative efforts from governments and organizations both domestically and internationally, the network has established over 40 recording sites in various habitats, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural areas, and urban environments. These sites span elevations from 0 to 3000 meters, covering a wide range of climatic conditions. As a result, the network provides crucial data for understanding the impact of climate change on biodiversity from different perspectives.
